Metropolitan Gala 2013: Who Wore It Better?

The Costume Institute Gala has always been the kind of event where celebrities can wear the most eccentric thing in their wardrobe and get away with it. This annual dinner celebrates the New York Metropolitan Museum’s Fashion Exhibit, and this spring’s exhibition, titled “PUNK: Chaos to Couture,” has been received to lukewarm reviews, and so has the fashion that came out on the red carpet.

While there were indeed some notable numbers this year, there were also plenty of stars who walked up with similar-ish looks. I polled my fellow Fashionese Daily editors for opinions on some of these corresponding looks, and here’s what we got:

1.Two-tone

While both of our first contenders wear the black-and-white combo, singer Gwen Stefani (in Margiela) wears a conventional colour combo with a very unconventional twist, while actress Leelee Sobieski (Dior) keeps it casual. Winner: Leelee Sobieski. She took this one by a landslide, because Gwen’s valiant effort at representing rock and roll on the red carpet leaves something to be desired (babygirl has killer abs, though!).

2. Electric pink

Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow (Valentino) and Mamie Gummer keep their hairstyles sleek and simple while rocking the highlighter neon pink look. WINNER: Gwyneth Paltrow. The only thing that kept votes from swinging Mamie Gummer’s way was her quasi-BDSM harness. Other than that, we loved the shape and texture of her ballgown.

3. Stripes

It’s a battle of supermodels and generations when young Chanel Iman (J. Mendel) takes on industry veteran Liya Kebede (Alberta Ferretti). WINNER: Liya Kebede. While we found nothing technically wrong with Chanel’s dress, we thought the dramatic silhouette of Liya’s dress was better-suited for the evening’s occasion.

4. Sheer

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in a barely-there face off with Alexa Chung (Erdem) WINNER: Alexa Chung. Sorry, Rosie. While I like your look, it looks like you’ve got all the sheer in all the wrong places to lose you some votes.

5. Plunging necklines

Kirsten Dunst (Louis Vuitton) and English it-girl Cara Delevingne (Burberry) take a page out of the early 2000s to channel Jennifer Lopez with these dangerously low-cut outfits. WINNER: Cara Delevingne. There’s just too much going on with Kirsten’s dress – the neckline, the feathers, the halter neck – while Cara’s no-nonsense floor-length sheath dress makes keeps the focus on the neckline. (the studs are a great touch too).

6. Old Hollywood charm

How adorable do Hailee Steinfeld (Donna Karan Atelier) and Jennifer Lawrence (Dior) look! Old Hollywood charm from two young starlets. WINNER: Jennifer Lawrence. J-Law is killing it with the red lip, although we’d replace the strappy shoes with something simpler.

7. Mile-high hair

Now we’re talking! American businesswoman/socialite/firestarter Julie Macklowe (Zang Toi) and Nicole Richie (Topshop) did well to keep include the Met’s exhibit on punk in their dress code, and Nicole was probably the individual that night who came closest to manifesting the punk credo by wearing plebe-friendly Topshop. WINNER: Julie Macklowe. This was a tough one. The only reason Nicole lost is because we thought her frosty mane would look better at an Ice Queen party.

Recalling Fashion From The Sixties

The ‘60s might have been an important decade throughout fashion history. Numbers of fashion icons from the decade are still inspiring. Who doesn’t love Jacqueline Kenedy‘s ladylike style, Audrey Hepburn-esque look, or Twiggy‘s chicness. I love them all so I’m happy that the 60s era is cherished again. From the Ready to Wear Fall/ Winter 2011 runways, it’s apparent that many designers are recalling the trend from the 60s. The key to the trend is shapes. As we can see from pictures below, apparels that reflect ’60s fashion can be distinguished from their shapes such as dress with A-line cutting, cocoon-shape coat and square or boxy jacket. What’s your opinion about ’60s fashion? Love it or loathe it?

‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Marks The Start of Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week

Last Friday, “Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Alberta Ferretti became the first fashion show on Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week in conjunction with Plaza Indonesia 21^st Anniversary. This fashion show collaborated with Yayasan Jantung Indonesia which also realized the idea that “fashion is charitable, and being charitable is always fashionable”. No wonder that the show was packed with invited socialites, who were likely care about both fashion and charity.

Talking about fashion show, it was really beautiful. It gave me the feeling as if I were in blooming springtime, seeing fairies in beautiful clothes. According to Alberta Ferretti, “with this collection I tried to reinvent femininity focusing on a bohemian style embodied by charming girls dressed in floral printed peasant tops and long hippie chiffon skirts that express a free and ultra feminine spirit. The naturalness is expressed with fabrics such as silk, flower printed chiffon, macramé lace, crochet and handmade lace.”

Flower-printed long dresses, crochet miniskirts, shorts and linen trench coats. Shirts and light skirts show lace bras and short underneath. Spring-summer spirit is reflected by the color and motifs on the fabric; fresh but not too vibrant to keep the romantic feeling. To complete the whole look, the models wore flat sandals; some of them were also accessorized with straw hat.

The Plaza Indonesia 21st Anniversary Fashion Week runs until Friday, 25 March 2010 with Jean Paul Gaultier to close the event.
