Today’s Outfit: The Debut of the New Editor

Hello! I’m super nervous about presenting Today’s Outfit because I did not plan on it being featured here at all! As I rushed to leave the office one evening, our managing editor, DesZell, instructed me to stand in a corner and take photos for my first Today’s Outfit feature. Despite the sad state of affairs my tresses were in, I apprehensively complied because I am an obedient employee, and because I thought you should see this amazing jacket I own from local label Anonymous. It comes in a pale green shade and features oversized peaked lapels, made out of a brocade-ish material that could have totally worked on an episode of Game of Thrones.

Anonymous jacket | Zara blouse | Levi’s jeans | Naturalizer shoes | Emsio bag | Braun Buffel spectacles

Accessorizing an outfit is always fun, and watches are a quick and easy way to jazz up any look, which is why I love this Michael Kors Silver Runway Watch for its versatility and tough vibe. Now I’m not one to spend a lot of money on accessories, so I am very lucky to have a mother with good taste and poor impulse control: she will buy any accessory she takes a fancy to without thinking twice, and then COMPLETELY FORGET that she bought that particular accessory at all (I’m not even kidding. That woman has a cache of  flats from Tod’s that she hasn’t worn since she bought them because they’re half a size too small). This is good for me because I end up inheriting everything she leaves on a shelf to collect dust, including designer bags and shoes! I paired my watch with a fun bracelet and ring she picked up somewhere in the bowels of Mangga Dua. Thanks, mama!

Boyfriend Jeans-a Safer Choice for Hijabers?

The first thought that came to mind for the title of this article was “No Skinny Jeans, Please!” Some hijabers, myself included, really  feel ‘unsafe’ about the idea of wearing skinny jeans. The way they hug the legs so tightly shows no sign of modesty at all. The insecurity that skinny jeans bring to hijabers doesn’t stop there. This actually makes sense since we often find ourselves strolling inside different stores and mostly will only find skinny jeans. Of course, there are also flare and straight leg jeans – but they, too, are usually fitted around the thighs.

So, for hijabers, you might want to consider having a collection of boyfriend-style jeans. They guarantee you a looser fit appearance – that won’t fall too tightly around your legs and not as slouchy as wide-legged or flared jeans. You also don’t have to worry that them looking like a pair of oversized jeans and will not complement your figure.

The best thing about boyfriend jeans is that you can pair them up with any short hem tops – which doesn’t happen all the time for hijabers. Boyfriend jeans are perfect for any type of tops that fall short above the hips. As a hijaber, I always feel uneasy wearing  jeans or trousers that fit tightly around the crotch and rear area. Not only that this is against the syariah but it also shows too much of your figure. Boyfriend jeans, on the other hand, tend to have a looser fitting that won’t expose those areas.

Levi’s 501 Jeans; 140 Years & Endless Interpretation

It has been almost two decades ago that I first had my pair of Levi’s jeans and since the Levi’s 501 is the most iconic jeans from Levi’s – or probably jeans in general – being a teenager that felt the need  to belong somewhere, I picked the Levi’s 501 from any other jeans that Levi’s had at that time. They may not be the latest cut and shape, but the silhouette remains a classic that you can still wear today or for years to come without feeling that they’re outdated. I still remember my 501 pair vividly. They were a red pair of jeans and I am not the only one who’s  reminiscing with the wide-array of Levi’s 501 colour selections back in the 90′s. Our favourite columnist. @LyndaIbrahim, too shares the same memory with me. But that’s the thing about Levi’s 501. Just with a little touch, you can bring them back to life and give them a touch of trend that is currently happening at the moment. It’s simply because Levi’s 501 jeans are a timeless piece.

So why are Levi’s 501 jeans so iconic? Because they never stop to evolve according to time and adapt to the changes that are faced by different generations. They’re also famous for their toughness and durability and their ability to sort of adapt themselves to the contours of the wearers’ bodies overtime to create a unique classic yet timeless shape of a jeans.

What’s difference with Levi’s 501 at their 140th anniversary? They’re coming out with a non-denim Levi’s 501 collection for the first time, while still embodies the Levi’s 501 gene and tradition, but with a touch of today’s trend.

Without much further ado, here are the Levi’s 501 and the different interpretations of how you could wear them.

Levi’s 501; 140 Years of the Iconic Jeans

I think it’s hard to think about Levi’s without relating it to its iconic jeans, the 501. I can’t believe that this year is Levi’s 501′s 140th Anniversary. Wow, they’ve been around for long, haven’t they? The model remains a classic and each year there’s always some new refreshing touch to it. Did you know that the Levi’s 501 has also made its way to Time Magazine’s ‘Fashion Item of the 20th Century’?

I remember the first time I bought my pair of Levi’s. It was the 501 jeans dated back to my junior high school years. Wow, that was ages ago. If I had to choose one word to describe it, then it would be ‘timeless’ because I can’t believe that even now, years after I’ve outgrown my Levi’s 501, it’s still here and still in fashion.

To commemorate the 140th Anniversary, Levi’s has made a Levi’s 501 Interpretation campaign to show the many different ways you can wear the jeans. Each to their own, when it comes to styling this jeans. Everyone wears it differently. Through this campaign, they’re collaborating with renowned Indonesian street art artist, Darbotz, at five strategic locations in Jakarta: Central Park Mall, Pondok Indah Mall, Grand Indonesia, Tebet and Kemang. The campaign for Jakarta was held from 8-24 March 2013, where in each of these locations there’s one street art installment placed representing the characteristics of Levi’s 501.
